Frequently Asked Questions
Will a nanny be considered my employee?
Yes. The IRS defines a household employer as someone who pays an individual $2,300 or more in a calendar year to work in their home. There are tax implications including some breaks with this arrangement. We strongly encourage families to engage a tax/payroll service to handle this aspect, and are happy to provide you with contact information to a trusted tax professional.
What are typical nanny salaries in the New York metropolitan area?
There are many variables that affect the salary of a nanny including experience, education, proficient languages, household responsibilities, travel requirements with family, and more. Typically, a starting salary is approximately $50,000 and up.
Do nannies receive additional benefits?
Typically, nannies receive paid vacation, paid national holidays and paid sick days. In some cases, families choose to include other benefits such as health care or stipend for travel. At Chelsea Nanny, we can help with these choices and assist in developing a contract that clearly and formally outlines these conditions.
What is your fee structure?
We charge an initial fee of $400 to initiate the process (non-refundable, but credited back to the family after a match has been made). This includes a detailed interview of the family, an internal search within our talent pool, and secondary interviews with candidates. These candidates will also be fully vetted by our third-party background check service. As well, Chelsea Nanny charges a 15% flat fee of the candidate’s gross annual salary. How extensive is your screening process for nannies?
We conduct a very rigorous screening process that includes individual interviews with both of our agency founders and in-depth reference calls. Chelsea Nanny also performs additional screening using a third-party FCRA compliant background screening service that analyzes social security, national criminal background, national sex offender registry, OFAC terrorist watch, and (a seven-year county court record will also be performed upon a formal offer). These are included as part of our service at no additional cost. Supplementary checks such DMV and drug screening may also be included at an additional fee.
